WHAT ARE THE VEDAS?

|| Nendriyani Imanam Veda Hainam Vedayanti Tasmadahurwada Iti Pippalashruthi ||
Translation: The soul cannot know the senses. Doubt cannot be known. But he is only known by the Vedas.

Pippala's verse makes it clear that these visions became known as Vedas. Kheeraswamy, a critic of the Amarasa, says that "the last dharma is the Dharmam Veda". We know religion by this. So that also means Veda. The Vedas are derived from the words.

"Nirshrayasakarni Karmani Avedaantiti Veda" which gives moksha.

Vedas are four - Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharvana Veda. Each Veda is further sub-divided into 4 parts: 1. Samhita 2. Brahmana 3. Aranyaka 4. Upanishad. Another way to sub-divide the same Vedic corpus is to identify the Karma Kanda and Jnana Kanda.

Rig Veda is the oldest literary treatise in the world.
